10 Famous Hole-in-One Shots

Hole In OneA Hole-in-One shot is one of the most rare events in golf. It can be achieved with the right combination of skill and luck. Most hole-in-one shots are achieved on a par 3 hole, but in some instances golfers have been able to get one on a par 4 or par 5 hole. The shot can be achieved with the right combination of skill and luck.

Here are some of the most notable hole in one shots:

1.  Tiger Woods at the 1997 Phoenix Open

At the beginning of his career, Tiger Woods was already making an impact on the golf world. During just his second year as a pro golfer, he won the Master’s and made a historical hole in one shot at the Phoenix Open on hole 16 in what became one of the loudest hole in one celebrations.

2. Billy Joe Patton at the 1954 Master’s

Billy Joe Patton was invited to play in the 1954 Master’s as an amateur and missed qualifying for the playoffs by just one shot. During the competition, he sunk a hole in one on the sixth hole, making his performance the closest any amateur has come to the playoffs.

3. Mike Crean on the 9th hole of the Green Valley Ranch Golf Club

Mike Crean currently holds the record for the single longest hole in one. His achievement came on a par-5 on hole 9 of the Greean Valley Ranch Golf Club in Denver, CO. Although his record-breaking hole in one has been accepted by the U.S. Golf Association, at tmes Crean himself doesn’t even believe it happened.

4. Lee Trevino on the 7th hole at the Treetops Resort

Lee Trevino is the owner of the largest payout for a single golf shot. Trevino participated in the 2001 Par-3 Shootout at the Treetops Resort in Gaylord, MI. His winning shot won him $1.09 million, $500,000 of which he donated to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis.

5. Claude Harmon at the 1947 Master’s

No one had scored a hole in one on hole 12 at the Master’s since its inception in 1934. However, during the thirteenth year of the competition Claude Harmon sunk a hole in one on the ever-challenging hole. The Augusta National course where the Master’s are held is renowned for its difficulty, making Harmon’s feat all the more impressive.

6. David Toms at the 2001 PGA Championship

Toms won his first and only championship at the 2001 PGA Chamionship at Atlantic Athletic Club by one stroke over Phil Mikelson. His hole in one was accomplished on hole 15 and brought him to a 54-hole lead over his competitors.

7. Jonathon Byrd at the 2010 Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital Open

Jonathon Byrd made history when he scored the fist hole in one to ever conclude a PGA playoff. His ace on the fourth playoff hole led him to victory and earned him a spot at the 2011 Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.

8. Fred Couples at the 1997 Players Championship

Hole 17 at the TPC Stadium Course has been proven one of the most difficult holes for players with the tee almost completely surrounded by water. Hole 17 has been called the “Island Green” and in 1997 Fred Couples scored his notable hole in one from it. Two years later, after his first ball went into the water, Couples hit his second ball directly into the cup. He is the only player to accomplish that feat on this hole.

9. Rich Beem at the 2007 Nissan Open

Rich Beem became the focus of a Nissan TV commercial after his hole in one on hole 14 won him a brand new Nissan. In his excitement, Beem climbed on top of the car and gave it a giant hug. Nissan liked his excitement so much they turned it into a commercial.

10. Jerry Barber at the 1962 Buick Open

Jerry Barber scored a 222-yard hole in one on hole 17 during the final round of the 1962 Buick Open. This hole in one was the first televised hole in one, putting Jerry Barber’s ace down in golf history.

Hole In One Winner – George Jones

TWO FOR ONE… A lucky golfer wins big after making a hole in one!

George Jones of Arlington, Virginia woke up at 2:00AM on the morning of June 21, 2012 and drove five hours so that he could make the morning shotgun.  George has been participating in the Urban League of Hampton Roads Golf Classic for many years and even though the temperatures were to reach over 100 degrees that day, George was not going to miss it.  George and his foursome began the day on hole #6 of The Signature at West Neck Golf Club in Virginia Beach.  As they played the course and the summer heat became unbearable, George and his team thought about calling it quits, retiring to the club house early.  Approaching hole #5, the last hole of the day, George and his playing partners decided to stick it out for the chance to win, not only a motorcycle but also a new car!!  There were two prizes offered to the golfers on this hole.  From 167 yards, George hit a perfect ball.  George could not believe it… his partner yelled “your ball is in the hole”.  Immediately, the golfers starting making phone calls and sharing the news with their friends.  George was in complete shock… he could not believe it.  This was the biggest thrill of his life!!  George can’t wait to return to the event next year, in his new car!

Enjoy your new Harley-Davidson and Audi, George!
